Stuart Anderson

January 1, 1940 — December 24, 2013

Stuart Allen Anderson, 73, of Elbow Lake, died Tuesday, December 24, 2013. He was born on January 1, 1940, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Warren and Edith (Arnquist) Anderson. He grew up in Elbow Lake and graduated from Elbow Lake High School. Stuart loved to play sports in school and later told many stories of their successful teams. After graduation, he joined the service and spent most of his time in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1963. Stuart married Jean "Carolyn" Gerth on January 14, 1961. They lived in both the Barrett and Elbow Lake communities where they raised their four daughters. He worked for over 40 years at Mendelson Egg Company, starting by driving a truck route, becoming foreman, and later working for the company at Lake Park when it was sold to them. Stuart was always very interested in history and politics. He did a lot of reading, including his entire set of encyclopedias. He was very knowledgeable in many subjects and knew many answers to many questions; if he didn't know the answer, he would find it. He took pride in his family and always needed to make sure everyone was "okay." He had so many hobbies and interests over the years, some of which included bowling, hunting, sports, scuba diving, collecting various items, and reading. He also had a small tree service and chainsaw business for several years. He enjoyed his grandchildren's sporting events, and loved to tell stories, sometimes over and over again. But his favorite pastime was spending time with family and friends at the lake cabin on Ten Mile Lake. After retirement, Stuart became very active and involved in several community organizations. He was a past member of the school board and the library board. He was also the President of the Grant County Historical Society and Commander of the American Legion Post 321. Stuart served on the Elbow Lake City Council until January 2013, when he was elected the Mayor of the City of Elbow Lake. He devoted much time and research to being Mayor, a job he loved. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Anderson; four daughters, Karen (Gary) Huebner of Elbow Lake, Kayla Anderson (Dennis Goerdt) of Elbow Lake, Kimberly (David) Nohre of Monticello, and Katie Anderson (Travis Nyreen) of Elbow Lake; nine grandchildren, Brent (Jackie) Huebner, Laura Huebner, Lydia Anderson (Michael Riley), Matthew Anderson (Amy Henning), Sarah Nohre (Joey Lohse), Lisa (Chris) Seefeldt, Annabelle Haarstad, Jeremiah Haarstad, and Ben Nyreen; six great-grandchildren, Braeden and Zachary Huebner, Haley Riley and Jaece Anderson, Lucas Seefeldt, and Kira Lohse. Other survivors include his sister Rosalind (Vincent) Johnson of Evansville, his brother Leonard (Linda) Anderson of Mt. Carroll, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Stuart was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Grant County Historical Society or the Grant County Humane Society.
