Ruth Blackwell

Ruth E. Blackwell, 93, of Barrett, died Friday, June 7, 2013, at the Prairie Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake, with her family at her side. The service for Ruth Blackwell will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 10, 2013, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett with the Rev. Matthew Rose officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. Ruth was born January 25, 1920, in Two Harbors, Minnesota, the only child of Nels and Hannah (Skoog) Rosdahl. She was baptized and confirmed at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Ruth graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1938 and continued her education at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelors of Science in Education. On September 5, 1944, Ruth was united in marriage to Robert D. Blackwell in Florida. Following their marriage, the couple returned to Two Harbors. Robert and Ruth had two children, Judy and Joe. Ruth taught Home Economics and English for the Duluth School District. Upon retirement from teaching, Ruth began working at Glass Block Department Store in Duluth. Ruth enjoyed time spent at the family cabin on Sand Lake by Ely. She also loved time spent sewing and doing cross-stitch. Ruth moved to Barrett in 1994, were she kept active with the Barrett Study Club, Senior Citizens Club, and her morning coffee at the Barrett Inn. In 2009, Ruth moved to Rolling Hills Residence in Barrett were she kept very busy doing crafts, playing Bingo and cards, and serving as the Resident President of Rolling Hills. Ruth was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church. Ruth is survived by her children Judy (Gary) Boots of Barrett and Joe (Roxie) Blackwell of Duluth; grandchildren Rob Blackwell and Jeff Blackwell of Duluth, Jacob Blackwell of Seattle, Washington, Rick (Cindy) Swanson of Erdahl, Tony (Renae) Lien of Elbow Lake and Heather (Brad) Fox of Minnetonka. She also has many great-grand children. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
