Rita Brekke

Rita Brekke, age 90, passed away January 18, 2016 at Pioneer Home in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Rita Marie Haverkamp was born on August 22, 1925 to Herman and Mary Jesse (Cluckey) in Ogema, Minnesota. Rita grew up and received her schooling in Ogema. Following graduation she lived in Alexandria and worked at the Alexandria Creamery and Osteberg's Café before moving to Elbow Lake where she met and married Norald Brekke on September 1, 1950. She worked at various restaurants including the Corner Café and the Cat's Eye. She also worked at Jarvis Foods and Andy's Grocery until finally retiring in 2006 at the age of 80. Rita enjoyed cooking, baking and she was best known for her donuts, fudge and lemon meringue pie. She and Nory loved fishing, especially in Canada, camping and entertaining family and friends. Evenings were spent embroidering quilt squares and dish towels while watching her favorite westerns on television. She was an active member of St. Olaf Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. She was also a Tupperware salesperson for many years. Rita is survived by her children, Barbara (Al) Lotthammer of New London, Mark (Viki) Brekke of Elbow Lake, Michael Brekke (partner Terry Gadaire) of Phoenix, AZ, Mary (Tim) Bieniek of Wendell, and Andrew Brekke of Wendell; seven grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Warren Brekke; sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Loretta, Dorothy Mae, and Doris Haverkamp, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Rita in death are her parents; husband, Norald; six brothers: Ivan, Wilbur, Lawrence, Harlow, Arthur and Ervin; six sisters: Ora Mae, Melverna, Mildred, Marie, Evie and JoyAnn. Mass of Christian Burial: 11AM Friday, January 22, 2016 at St. Olaf Catholic Church, Elbow Lake, MN with Father Michael Kellogg officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
