Reuben was born in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, on October 24, 1931, to Albert and Hazel (Berg) Island. He attended country school until the 8th grade. Then he set off to farm alongside his father. Reuben was a man of many talents. He especially enjoyed welding and making metal art chairs from tractor parts, as well as wall decor. He also fashioned a go-kart that his children enjoyed driving around his parent's farm. Reuben loved music and was able to play piano, accordion and harmonica all by ear. He enjoyed woodworking and painting and often started his mornings by having coffee with local friends at Hans’ House.
