Marvel Sandberg

May 17, 1924 — March 12, 2015

Marvel Winona Sandberg, 90, Monticello, formerly of Barrett, died Thursday, March 12, 2015 at CentraCare Health System in Monticello. Marvel was born May 17, 1924 in Erdahl, the daughter of Axel and Clara (Anderson) Sandberg. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. She graduated from the Barrett High School in 1942 and after high school, she was employed as a bookkeeper in South St. Paul. On June 21, 1946, Marvel was united in marriage to John E.K. Sandberg by John's father, the Rev. Ivar Sandberg at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Barrett. They lived their entire married life in Barrett. Marvel worked at the Elbow Lake Hospital, Barrett Care Center, and then with John at their Our Own Hardware business in Barrett, retiring in 1986. She enjoyed fishing, bingo, word games and playing cards. Marvel and John enjoyed their hobby farm, where they did wood cutting and splitting. They were lovingly called "the woodchucks" by their children and the farm was groomed like a park. Marvel appreciated both flower and vegetable gardening, doing both canning and freezing. She enjoyed the family lake home on Eagle Lake and all the great memories. Marvel devoted most of her life to her family. Marvel is survived by two daughters, Claire (Bob) McGillic of Big Lake and Izzy (Devin) Rusch of Brandon; grandchildren, John Henry (Laura) Sandberg of Salem, NC, Matthew (Kiera) Sandberg of Rock Hill, SC, Pamela Sandberg of Charlotte, NC, Patrick (Karen) McGillic of Minneapolis, Ben (Amber) Rusch of Brandon and Sarah Rusch Pruesser of Maple Grove; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Phyllis Johnson of Ashby; brother-in-law, Paul (Norma) Sandberg of Hoffman; and by numerous relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; son, Timothy; two sisters, Dora Lang and Edna Swenson; and one brother, Milo Sandberg.
