Marilyn Weigand passed away January 13, 2026, at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND, with her daughter and son-in-law at her side.
Marilyn Anne was born at home on November 11, 1935, to Lawrence and Edna (Nelson) Hutchings as the second of four children. She was baptized at Bethania Lutheran Church. She attended country school District #26 through the third grade when her and her family moved to the Sanford farm. Marilyn finished her schooling in Elbow Lake, graduating in 1953. The Monday after graduation, she started her job at 1st National Bank in Elbow Lake.
Marilyn met the love of her life, Clair, while roller skating in Wendell at the Hall and became high school sweethearts. On June 7, 1955, Marilyn and Clair Weigand were united in marriage and together they made their home at Clair’s family farm. The wedding date was chosen before they looked at what day of the week it was, so they were wed on a Tuesday, in the middle of farming season.
Marilyn became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1955. Two years later, Marilyn experienced the joy of becoming a mother. Her daughter, Angela Jeanne was born in 1957. Marilyn began working at the State Bank in Wendell in 1963 before switching careers in 1969 to work as a postal clerk. In 1973, Marilyn got promoted to postmaster and kept that position until her retirement on January 1, 1997.
Marilyn was a Sunday school teacher for over 25 years, starting while she was still in high school. She was a member of Trinity Ladies Aid and Circle, Lawrence Township Homemakers, Grant County Food Shelf board member, and Trinity Quilters.
Once retired, Marilyn and Clair enjoyed traveling. They traveled to Florida every winter for ten years and made numerous road trips around the United States. Her favorite trip was a one-month long Mediterranean cruise. Marilyn cherished watching the grandkids and great-grandkids, especially playing pretend with them. Flower gardening was a great pastime for Marilyn. She planted around 100 unique varieties of hosta’s, and many different perennials, with one of her favorites being the iris. She also enjoyed reading, mission quilting, scrapbooking, feeding the birds at the lake, and “old-time” dancing on Saturday nights at the Barrett Pavilion.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clair; grandson Kyle Ross; brother Robert (Dona) Hutchings; brother-in-law Gary Stavig, and brother-in-law & sister-in-law Robert & Leone Weigand.
She is survived by her daughter Angi (Daryl) Jensen; grandson Tyler (Jenni) Jensen; granddaughter Kelcy Jensen, and great grandchildren Lili, Logan and Liam Jensen; sister Caroline Stavig, sister & brother-in-law Faye & Brad Thomas, brother-in-law & sister-in-law Don & Gloria Weigand, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00PM Saturday. May 16, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wendell, with visitation starting at 12 noon. Interment at Trinity Cemetery, rural Wendell.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Grant County Food Shelf or the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Fund.
