Krista Leraas

April 22, 1974 — April 16, 2015

Krista Kay Leraas passed peacefully at her birth home near Barrett MN on April 16, 2015. She was appropriately born on April 22, 1974, Earth Day. Krista was the daughter of Charles and Marilyn Leraas. She grew up in the Leraas Family farm and after high school attended the University of MN where she obtained her undergraduate degree in child psychology. She went on to obtain her Master's degree in Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community from New College of California. She eventually made Minneapolis her home and the place where she spread her passion for the emerging field of sustainability, including organic farming and nonprofit programming. In the last decade, she served as a board member for Gardening Matters, adjunct faculty for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, sole proprietor of Chickadee Consulting, Owner/COO of Harvest Moon Edible Landscapes, Managing Director for the Alliance of Sustainability, and was a Scholarship Counselor for Minnesota Child Care Resource and Referral Network. She dedicated her life's work to sustainability and her heart to her friends and family. Krista's hobbies and interests included gardening, cooking, traveling, bird watching, camping and hiking, reading and writing. Her passion for the environment and taking care of this earth was carried out both in her work life and her personal life. She had a strong commitment to cooking and eating nutritious and organic foods. Eating healthy for Krista was therapeutic. One of her greatest enjoyments was spending quality time with her family and friends maintaining many many long time friendships. Krista is survived by her mother Marilyn (Roger Knapp), her brothers Murray (Courtney) of Minneapolis, John (Melissa) of Delano, MN and Garik (Leslie) of Alexandria MN and 8 nieces and nephews Kennedy Lynn, Briauna, Rilynn, Avery, Emersyn, Landan, Khalan, and Kherington Leraas, maternal grandparents Dale and Betty Larson, Fergus Falls, three aunts, Beatrice (Dayle) DeFrance of Barrett, Doris Leraas of Minneapolis, and Vicki (Gary) Neuharth of Bismarck, one uncle, Monroe Leraas and 7 cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Leraas and paternal grandparents Olaf and Alice Leraas. Visitation: 6PM to 8PM, Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett with a Prayer Service being held at 7:45PM. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at Peace Lutheran Church.
