Judith Gunderson, a devoted art educator and respected community leader, passed away on May 8, 2026, at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota. Born Judith Sperling on December 5, 1947, in Park Rapids, Minnesota, she lived a life marked by dedication to her craft, her faith, and the many people she touched throughout her career and personal life.
Judith, affectionately known as Judy, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, which remained a steadfast foundation throughout her life. A graduate of Park Rapids High School in 1965, she pursued higher education with determination, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Art Education from Moorhead State University in 1969. Her education laid the groundwork for a remarkable teaching career.
Judy committed over 32 years to teaching art within the Elbow Lake/West Central Area School System, where she left an indelible mark on countless students. She was not only an instructor but a mentor who made every individual feel important and loved. Judy’s impact was particularly profound as she taught both mothers and daughters, fostering creativity and confidence across generations. Beyond the classroom, she shared her talents as a Toastmaster and served as President of numerous organizations, demonstrating an exceptional ability to speak eloquently and thoughtfully on any topic.
In her personal life, Judy married Marvin Gunderson on November 10, 1969, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Their longstanding partnership was a testament to mutual love and support. Together they raised a family and built a life enriched by shared interests and values. They still held hands each night while watching television. Judy’s beloved daughter, Joslyn Gunderson, survives her and resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She also leaves behind her husband, Marvin Gunderson of Elbow Lake, and her brother, Lowell Sperling of Ponsford, Minnesota, and other relatives Renae (Ken) Green, Niki (Brian) Wiesner, Brad (An) Green, Shirley Woltjer, Colleen Anda, Kurt (Renee) Woltjer, Lowell Sperling, and Jimmy Sperling. Her family and friends will remember her not only for her professional achievements but for her warmth and deep commitment to those around her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Lydia Sperling, and her daughter, Kayla Gunderson.
Outside of her professional and organizational commitments, Judy enjoyed skiing, traveling, and the theater. She had a passion for making plays, painting theatrical scenes, and nurturing her artistic expression overall. Spending quality time with family and friends, as well as participation in study clubs, were among her treasured pursuits.
Judith Gunderson’s life was characterized by an unwavering dedication to education, art, and community service, leaving a legacy that will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
