James Flint

October 9, 1920 — February 21, 2009

James Flint, 88, Hoffman, (formerly of Elbow Lake) passed away Saturday, February 21, 2009, at the Hoffman Good Samaritan Center in Hoffman. Funeral services for James Flint will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, February 25, at the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elbow Lake with Pastor Don Trulson officiating. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to the service. James Edward Flint was born in Elbow Lake on October 9, 1920, to Guy M. and Ruby V. (Theobald) Flint. He received his early education in Elbow Lake and graduated in 1940 from the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. On November 9, 1941, Jim was united in marriage to Hulda Dehne in Holloway, Minnesota. The couple farmed near Holloway for two years before moving to Elbow Lake where they farmed east of town. When grandson Mike took over the family farm in 1999, Jim and Hulda moved to the Vart Hjem apartments. Jim enjoyed socializing with his many neighbors in the apartment building and could still be close to his farm. Hulda passed away in 2006, and Jim moved to the Hoffman Good Samaritan Center shortly after her death. Jim was an active member of his community and served on the township board, cemetery board, belonged to the Lions Club for many years, and was a charter member of the Grace Free Church where he taught both adult and youth Sunday school. He was devoted to his church and embraced its teachings. He even taught Bible study while living at the Good Samaritan Center. He loved music, was an avid reader and kept abreast of current events through many subscriptions he read cover-to-cover each month. He enjoyed visiting with his family and many friends. While on the farm, Jim enjoyed giving tractor rides to the kids, taking his young nephews on camping trips, and gardening. He was but one of several farmers who lended a hand and equipment in the building of the Tipsinah Mounds Golf Course. Survivors include his daughters Nancy (John) Scholl of Alexandria and Ruby (Richard) Babst of Champlin; daughter-in-law Rose Flint of Elbow Lake; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Ellis of Evansville and Alice Lorenz of Durango, Colorado; and sisters-in-law Delores Flint of Elbow Lake, Hazel Kalmoe of West St. Paul, and Pearl Dehne of Morris; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles and George Flint, sisters Helen Perry and Ruth Swenson, his wife Hulda, and son Robert. Arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake. On-line condolences may be sent at www.ericksonsmithfh.com
