Irene Getz was born on September 3, 1937, in Barrett, MN to Roy and Lorna Getz, passed away on March 2, 2026. Having lived her young life in Barrett, she graduated from Barrett High school as Valedictorian. She continued her education at Concordia University where she studied in education, followed by her doctorate in Psychology. Many years of her career were as an editor at Augsburg Fortress, a publishing house for Lutherans.

She was united in marriage to Edward “Ed” Fastner. They found each other through a dating advertisement in a local newspaper. Having both met later in life, Ed’s two children, Liz and Jeffrey, were fully grown, but they shared a mutual love between both families. They never fought and frequently were together throughout their lives, including their travels throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and the relatives they found on their visits.

Ed took up a painting class with his daughter Liz, and soon Irene joined with the same passion. They loved painting, especially about their travels. Norway especially holds a place in her heart as she loved the mountains and fjords. Their home was filled with their paintings, and once Ed accidentally sold one to his friend.

Affectionately known as "The Scotcheroo Lady" by friends and family, Irene would often bake and share this midwestern treat upon visits and would mail them for birthdays and Christmas. Along with Ed and Irene’s mailed Christmas cards, there were letters on family events throughout the year and their own lives. If you were a young child growing up, there may have been a small check for you as well. And when you were lucky enough to visit, she always had little kids' toys at her place ready for fun and adventure.

Irene helped keep the family farm her parents purchased within our family for her generation and her nephews. We are indebted to her years of her generosity, kindness, empathy, and smile. A true heart of the Getz family, her heart beats on in ours. She is preceded in death by her Parents: Roy and Lorna, and Siblings; David, Mona and Kathy. She is survived by Nephews; Brandt, Lance, Derek and Gerrit, Great Nieces and Nephews; MyKenzie, Issac, Ian, Kaleb, Braeden, Brooklyn and Kaley, Great Great Nephew; Ledger, Ed’s Children; Liz Rhodes and Jeffery Fastner, Grandchildren; Meagan, Kelsey, Ryan, Tanner, Bailey and Brecken, as well as numerous host of great family and friends.

Arrangements by Erickson-Smith Funeral Home.
