Esther Johnson of Hoffman died Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at the Glenwood Retirement Village at the age of 92. Esther Mathilda Minnie Johnson was born on February 6, 1923, the daughter of William and Louise (Lorenz) Abel. She was baptized on March 4, 1923, and confirmed on July 12, 1936, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman. Esther graduated from the Hoffman High School in 1941, graduating as Valedictorian, and continued her education at the Alexandria Technical College, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1970. Esther and Sigurd Johnson were married on May 21, 1947, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman. They lived in Hoffman and Esther was employed with the Glenwood Retirement Home for twenty-five years. Her interests included needlepoint, painting, writing poems, quilting, sewing, crocheting and embroidery. She cherished her family and especially her grandchildren while she ran Camp Granny.
She is survived by three children, Dorothy (Dave) Rahn of Waverly, Victor (Paulette) Johnson of Dent and Waldo (Valerie) Johnson of Hoffman; nine grandchildren, DeeAnn (Mike) Boehne, Erika (Rick) MacDonald, David Haack, Shawn Johnson, Brandi (Scott) Butkowski, Kristi (Jeremy) Rydeen, Paul Johnson, Matthew (Kristina Schiemeister) Johnson and Joshua (Julie) Johnson; ten great-grandchildren, Krystal, Sydney, Alexis, Hannah, Kooper, Kayden, Cobey, Gage, Riley and Tucker; and by numerous relatives and friends. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Sigurd on July 23, 2005; parents, William and Louise (Lorenz) Abel; three brothers, Rudolph, Daniel and John Abel; eight sisters, Rosa Rathke, Meta Abel, Louise Koehntop, Hulda Larson, Amelia Alvstad, Mathilda Mass, Edna Hanson and Lydia Abel; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. It was Esther's wish to donate her body for Anatomical Study and Research with the Mayo Clinic, to help others. Memorial Service: 10 am, Monday, November 2, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman Visitation: Sunday, November 1 from 2 to 5 pm at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
