Doris Lystrom

Doris I. Lystrom, 77, of Evansville, MN, formerly of Elbow Lake, MN, died on Sunday, November 1, 2015, at the Evansville Care Campus. Doris Ilene was born on March 28, 1938, at the family home in rural Douglas County, MN. She was the fifth child born to Oscar and Katherine (McColley) Covel. Doris was baptized in the Christian Faith. She attended Country School District #16 until moving to Alexandria in March of 1946. Doris graduated from Alexandria High School. Doris' father, Oscar was overjoyed to have another girl since his first child, a girl named Elvira, died of "brain fever" at the age of 12. Her father treated her like a queen until his death many years ago. Oscar and Katy's second son, Lloyd is the last child living, and is glad that both Oscar and Doris can now be together again. On April 16, 1960, she married Palmer Lystrom in Evansville and they were married for 27 years. They were the parents of two children whom they adopted, Lonnie and April. Doris worked various jobs including: JC Penney Store in Alexandria, The Cafe in Evansville, a daycare at home for a brief time, driving school bus for 10 years in Evansville, helping at noon hour with lunch at Evansville School. Doris worked at Bargain Bizarre in Elbow Lake and owned D's Country Cupboard Grocery Store in Elbow Lake. Doris was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elbow Lake. Doris was a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville. Doris was said to be the coolest grandma staying up late with her grandkids. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, cross stitching, bowling and roller skating with Palmer in her younger years. She was a jokester who loved kidding around with her family and friends. Doris spent Wednesday nights at the Knotty Pine Restaurant with her lady friends. Doris was known for her unconditional love to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Palmer Lystrom; granddaughter, Rhiley Henneman in 2015; brother, Ralph Covel; sisters, Gladys Martinson and Elvira Covel; sister-in-law, Donna Covel, and brother-in-law, Roy Martinson. Doris is survived by her two children, Lonnie (Nancy) Lystrom and April Lystrom of Evansville; five grandchildren, Kayla Glasby, Kaitlin Lystrom, Marisa Lystrom, Sean Henneman and Zach Henneman; one great-grandchild, Jackson Henneman; a brother, Lloyd Covel of Eugene, OR; a sister-in-law, Corrine Berglund of Evansville along with numerous relatives and friends. Visitation: 5-7 PM; Thursday, November 5, 2015 and prayer service at 6:30 at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home of Elbow Lake, with visitation continuing one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elbow Lake Interment: Hudson Cemetery, Forada, MN at a later date with family. Clergy: Pastor Gabriel Norton Funeral arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home of Elbow Lake.
