David Shauer

David “Dave” Thomas Shauer, 59, of Lowry, Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, following a sudden illness. Though he was 59, Dave had already been joking that he was 60.

Dave was born on September 19, 1966, in Morris, Minnesota, to Douglas and Jean (Olson) Shauer. The youngest of four brothers, he grew up along William, Alan, and Michael Shauer. He graduated from Hoffman-Kensington High School, and then Granite Falls Technical College.

Dave married his high school sweetheart, Michelle Pederson, on July 25, 1987. Over their 39 years together they lived in several states including Florida, Ohio, and Wisconsin, before returning to their Minnesota roots in 1995 to be closer to both sides of their family. They raised two children, Melissa (Jesse) Duhn of St. Paul, MN, born in June 1990, and Matthew Shauer, of Lowry, MN, born in April 1993. Dave was a proud grandfather to Sylvia, born in October 2020, and treasured watching her grow from a newborn into a kindergartner.

Dave spent his career as a hydraulic sales tech and in manufacturing, working for Douglas Machine.

An avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman, Dave loved being outside. Whether in his deer stand, by a fire, or out on the water, he was happiest outdoors. He also enjoyed reading, and inspired a lifelong love of literature in his children by always having a book or three he was working on around the house.

The family cabin held a special place in Dave’s heart. It was where he grew up spending time with his parents and brothers, and loved returning there with Michelle and their children. Some of his happies moments were spent at the cabin with family and friends. Earlier this year, he helped granddaughter Sylvia catch her first fish!

Dave was a storyteller, always ready with a tale and happy to talk your ears off. He loved nothing more than sitting near the fire at the cabin, cold beverage in hand, surrounded by friends and family, trading stories and listening to the loons and swans calling out across the lake.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Jean Shauer; his brother, Michael “Whitey” Shauer; brother-in-law, Steve Pederson; and many beloved hunting dogs.

An Open House Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Hoffman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Special Olympics of Alexandria, or the Forest Riders ATV Club.
