David Getz

August 28, 1947 — February 11, 2026

Barrett

David Getz, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on February 11, 2026, at the Barrett Care Center in Barrett, Minnesota. He was born on August 28, 1947, in Barrett, the son of Roy and Lorna, where he spent his early years before embarking on a path that would take him across various roles and experiences.

David graduated from Barrett High School in 1965 and continued his education at the University of Minnesota Morris, earning a Bachelor's Degree in 1969. His thirst for knowledge and dedication to his craft led him to work most of his life as a carpenter, where he found his true calling through hands-on work that illuminated his immense skill and craftsman spirit. He also briefly served as a janitor and bus driver for Barrett Public Schools, embodying a sense of community and support for those around him.

A proud veteran, David served faithfully in the U.S. Army, where he was honorably discharged. This service instilled in him a strong sense of duty and respect for his country. After his time in the military, he lived for many years in Phoenix, Arizona, only returning to Barrett in the early 2000s to be closer to his beloved grandchildren, a move that highlighted his deep love for family.

David was an active member of the Odd Fellows in Herman, where he found friendship and kinship within the community. He was not only known for his craftsmanship but also as an avid baseball fan, rarely missing a Barrett Pioneers game. His passion for sports extended to his love for NASCAR, especially for his favorite driver, the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr.

In retirement, David found solitude and joy in gardening at his farm and spending time on the point of Horseshoe Lake, where tranquility met nature. His life was enriched not just by his work and hobbies but by the joy of attending his grandchildren's activities, a testament to the love he had for family. David is survived by his sons, Derek (Sara) Getz of Norcross, MN; Lance Getz of Fargo, ND; Brandt (Adam Martinez) Getz of Phoenix, AZ; and Gerrit (Amber) Getz of Barrett, MN. He leaves behind seven grandchildren: Mykenzie, Isaac, Kaleb, Ian, Braedon, Brooklyn, and Kaley, as well as one great-grandchild, Ledger; a sister Irene Getz, along with numerous family and friends. They will all carry forward the memories of a man who lived life fully and with purpose.

David is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lorna Getz, and sisters, Mona Becker and Kathy Eilers.

A visitation will be held on February 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a memorial service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home, located at 116 1st Street Northeast, Elbow Lake, MN 56531.

As we gather to remember David, we celebrate a life rich in love, humor, and dedication—a true craftsman not just of wood but of cherished relationships. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy of warmth and laughter will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, and in honoring David’s love of animals, the family asks for you to consider a memorial to your favorite Humane Society.
