Carl O. Olson, 89, of Elbow Lake, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at the Barrett Care Center in Barrett, Carl Olof Olson was born to Olof and Effie (Johnson) Olson on April 17, 1922, on the farm homesteaded in 1887 by his grandparents Olof and Ingrid Olson in Sanford Township, Grant County, where he resided for 87 of his 89 years. He was baptized, confirmed, and was a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Elbow Lake where he served on the church Board of Deacons, sang with the church choir for many years, and taught Sunday school. On March 11, 1944, Carl married Helen Gladys Marie Van Horn, and to this union, they were blessed with four children: Cheryl, Carla, Marc, and Jon. Carl was a third generation farmer, raising Hereford cattle, small grains, and had a true love of the land. Carl served as President of Elbow Lake Co-op Oil Association, as an ASCS Director, Sanford County Chairman, a director of Holmes City Mutual of Alexandria, and a committee member of the Elbow Lake Sister City Association. After retirement, Carl enjoyed traveling with his wife Helen and spending time with his children and their families. Carl was a believer in education, sending all of his children to college. Carl is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen, of Elbow Lake; daughter, Carla (Chuck) of Brooklyn Park; two sons, Marc (Dr. Judy), of Barrett, and Dr. Jon (Tacie) of Brooklyn Park; five grandchildren: Marty (Kim) Miller, Pam (Dr. Tak) Sum, Ryan Olson, Emily Olson, and Eric Olson; one great-grandson, William Thomas Miller; cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cheryl Nelson; sisters, Edith Vaa and Ingrid Severson; a brother, Einar Olson; and a son-in-law, Bill Miller.
