Amelia Alvstad

August 16, 1920 — January 26, 2014

Amelia Augusta Abel Alvstad passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Evansville Care Campus. Amelia was born August 16, 1920, to William and Louise (Lorenz) Abel at Hoffman, Minnesota. She was the tenth of the twelve Abel children and was named after both of her grandmothers. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hoffman and graduated from Hoffman High School. Amelia was married to Carl Alvstad, August 23, 1942, making their first home in Pomme de Terre Township. They purchased their family farm in Elk Lake Township in 1947. Three sons were born to them-- Leslie, Gary, and Douglas. Amelia spent her life as a farm woman, doing everything from milking cows to hauling bales. She loved being outdoors. She was active in all of the churches where she belonged as an adult, which were Zionsborg, Lincoln, and Messiah, serving as a women's group officer, and serving faithfully in the kitchen for many events. She was a member of the Zionsborg Cemetery Association and always enjoyed the annual meeting and getting together with old friends. She loved watching her grandchildren grow up and especially enjoyed having them stay in her home. The grandchildren fondly remember picking raspberries and tulips, making collages with scraps she'd saved, eating sugared cereal and homemade pudding pops, reenacting fairy tales, playing games and being allowed to drive the pick-up, tractor and mower. She also enjoyed making quilts and afghans for children and grandchildren. Amelia and Carl moved from their beloved farm in 1998 to the North Star Manor in Hoffman. A few years later, she followed Carl into the Good Samaritan Home in Hoffman where she lived for 13 1/2 years before it closed. She transferred to the Evansville Care Campus in November of 2013. Amelia is survived by her sons Leslie (Karen), Barrett, and Douglas (Sandra) Alvstad, Evansville; seven grandchildren—Jonathan Alvstad (Tami Erickson), Jennifer (Mike) McLaughlin, Joel (Laura) Alvstad, Janelle (Neil) Mattson, Allison (Nick) Hansen, Brian Alvstad, and Kristina Amundson; fifteen great grandchildren; a sister, Esther Johnson of Barrett, one brother-in-law, Marcus Alvstad, Evansville, and four sisters-in- law—Mae Wick, Edna Strom, Vernie Alvstad, and Ardis Alvstad. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, son Gary, three brothers and seven sisters.
