She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from Elbow Lake High School. After graduation, Valdeen worked for Pillsbury in Minneapolis for a short time, before returning to Elbow Lake to work at the Grant County Recorder's Office.

In 1989, Arvin and Valdeen retired and moved to Elbow Lake where they became members of United Lutheran Church. They enjoyed spending winters in Arizona. A woman of strong faith, Valdeen was active with Dorcas. She also spent twenty years supporting the Soaring Unlimited Mission in Haiti.
